What is the “Revelation 12 sign”?

In the twelfth chapter of the book of Revelation, John writes of a “great wonder in heaven.” He goes on to describe what he sees: a woman clothed with the sun, the moon under her feet, and a crown of twelve stars. The book of Revelation as a whole is full of vivid imagery, and for centuries it has been a mystery. However, is it possible that we are on the verge of witnessing one of these signs unfold as described by John? Here is the text:

“And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars: And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered.” – Revelation 12:1–2

Before we get into looking at the sign, we must first review what God’s word has to say about the sun, moon, and stars. We also must clarify any misconceptions about biblical astronomy.

In Genesis, what did God say about the sun, moon, and stars?

“And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years” – Genesis 1:14

One of the first reasons God placed the lights in the firmament of the heaven was for “signs.” Signs in the heavens are there for specific reasons, such as direction or warning. Remember the star of Bethlehem that is called to memory every Christmas season? The wise men knew a king had been born. How? Because of the sign in the heavens.

Satan, the master deceiver and father of lies, has confused biblical astronomy with a modern counterfeit known as astrology. It is important to understand the distinction between the two and realize that biblical astronomy is clearly a part of Scripture. Take a look at some excerpts from the book of Job:

“Which commandeth the sun, and it riseth not; and sealeth up the stars. Which alone spreadeth out the heavens, and treadeth upon the waves of the sea. Which maketh Arcturus, Orion, and Pleiades, and the chambers of the south.” – Job 9:7–9

“Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion?” – Job 38:31

In several places in the book of Job, several constellations are mentioned. The fact is that God made all of the stars and the constellations.

Now that we understand God’s creation and purpose of the sun, moon, stars, and constellations, let’s look at two constellations in particular: Virgo and Leo:

In the bottom-left quadrant of the above screenshot we see the constellation Virgo, which is representative of a virgin woman. In the top-right quadrant we see the constellation Leo, which represents a lion. The constellation Leo consists of nine stars.

On September 23, 2017, the constellations Virgo and Leo are in the following configuration:

The above screenshot reveals an interesting pattern. The constellation Virgo (the woman) is “clothed” with the sun, as it is just above her shoulder. The moon is at her feet  and above her head is the constellation Leo, which consists of nine stars. However on September 23rd, an extremely rare alignment occurs. The planets of Mars, Mercury, and Venus align with Leo to provide the “crown” of twelve stars to the woman.

To make things a bit more interesting, let’s consider the role Jupiter plays in this equation. In Revelation 12:2, the woman is described as travailing in birth. Jupiter, commonly known as the “king star,” entered into the “womb” of the woman (the abdomen boundary lines) on November 19, 2016. After going into retrograde motion (basically a loop) in the abdomen of Virgo, Jupiter will exit the “womb” of the woman on September 9, 2017: 42 weeks exactly. What is the normal human gestation time? 37 to 42 weeks.

This begs a question: so how rare of an alignment is this? Many researchers have spent countless hours of work using astronomy data to calculate if any alignment such as this has ever occurred or will ever occur again. Considering that Jupiter is only in Virgo every twelve years, it wasn’t too difficult to plot out the coordinates of the relevant stars and check for alignment. The data was checked for thousands of years in the past and thousands of years in the future, and this alignment was not found to have occurred or will occur in the future.

As if it could not get any more interesting, let’s examine the Jewish feasts ordained by God. There are seven: four spring and three fall.

Spring Feasts:

  • Passover (fulfilled by Jesus’ cruxifixction)
  • Unleaven Bread (fulfilled by Jesus’ burial)
  • First Fruits (fulfilled by Jesus’ resurrection)
  • Pentecost (fulfilled by the Holy Spirit at Pentecost)

Fall Feasts:

  • Trumpets (unfulfilled)
  • Day of Atonement (unfulfilled)
  • Tabernacles (unfulfilled)

The 2017 Feast of Trumpets is September 21–22, 2017, just as this sign is coming into alignment.

We know that God’s word is perfect and infallible. We also know that the sun, moon, and stars are incorruptible by man. From our understanding, it appears that the alignment described in Revelation 12 will occur on September 23, 2017. However, I encourage you to do your own homework and decide for yourself. Is this just a big coincidence? Time will tell.

What could the alignment mean? Many have speculated, but the truth is no one knows with certainty. In the words of the Apostle Paul, let us not sleep as do others; but let us watch and be sober (1 Thessalonians 5:6).
